Other lovely Corfu beaches are the bays of Agios Georgios and Paleokastritsa, Arillas, Peroulades, and Sidari on the northwestern coast of the island, and Agios Gordios, Chalikounas, Issos, and Agios Georgios on the western and southwestern side of Corfu. The beaches of Kavos, Messonghi, and Moraitika on the southeastern coast are lovely, while Acharavi, Roda, Dasia, and Ipsos, located on the northeastern side are also wonderful. The island gets its name “Polis ton Korifon”, which means “City of the Peaks” which describes the two fortresses in the capital town. Corfu is full of sites of historical interest, such as the Old Fortress, the New Fortress, the canon, Spianada Square (with its buildings) and Liston Promenade, and the Archaeological, Byzantine and Asian Art Museums in the capital town, as well as Achillion (Austrian Princess Sissy’s Summer Palace) in Gastouri and the Monastery of Zoodochou Pigis in Paleokastritsa.
